FAQS

General Program

Sports Matter is an initiative to raise awareness and address the growing issue of underfunded youth athletics nationwide. It is the signature program of The DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation.

Sports Matter has two parts: Through a partnership with DonorsChoose.org, Sports Matter enables youth sports teams to raise half of the funds they need and earn a matching grant from The DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation. In addition, Sports Matter includes DICK'S Sporting Goods' Sponsorship & Donations program.

With your help, we can help more kids play sports, have fun and learn important life skills.

Last year, DICK'S and The DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation made a $25 million multi-year commitment to support youth sports.

In addition, we are providing opportunities for our valued customers like you, our employees, and our vendor partners to join us in saving youth sports.

DICK'S Sporting Goods and the DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation believe sports truly matter because they make people better.

Youth sports participation is declining and $3.5 billion was cut from youth sports programs in recent years. It's estimated that 27% of US public high schools will not have ANY sports by 2020.

Through a partnership with DonorsChoose.org, we will match up to $1.5 million in donations made on this leading crowdfunding site to hundreds of public and public charter school sports teams.

Additionally, we will continue to afford all youth sports teams and leagues the opportunity to apply for DICK'S Sporting Goods' Sponsorships & Donations.

Sports Matter offers funding opportunities for youth sports teams and leagues.

Program Execution - Public Schools Only

A basic level of proficiency using computers, the Internet, and online platforms is highly recommended.

The success of crowdfunding campaigns varies from platform to platform and depends heavily on the campaign leaders to do as much outreach as possible using a variety of tactics.

On average, 70% of DonorsChoose.org campaigns are successful.

While the exact amount of time depends entirely on what your goal is and how much help you have, it's very important to recognize that crowdfunding is typically a time-intensive endeavor.

A successful campaign requires multiple rounds of outreach, keeping track of who has been contacted, holding helpers accountable to their tasks, following up on promises of support, and continually brainstorming new ways to bring supporters on board.

The good news is that engaging supporters for this campaign is also building a network of supporters for the future, so the time you spend now is also an investment.

Your team is welcome to conduct fundraisers and collect funds offline, but please note that all donations must be processed through DonorsChoose.org in order to contribute to your fundraising goal.

If you plan to hold small fundraising events in order to benefit your campaign, bring a smartphone or tablet with internet capability to ensure your ability to collect donations.

Submit a classroom project (not a class trip project) to be eligible for the Sports Matter matching donation.

DonorsChoose.org works on a point system that encourages first time teachers to select a lower dollar amount for their first project. You can read more about this point system on their website. We understand that sometimes your students may need more than $2,000 in equipment so we've teamed up with DonorsChoose.org to make an exception for Sports Matter teams.

Program Execution - Nonprofits

Unfortunately at this time, we do not recognize other crowdfunding platforms for the 2015 Sports Matter program. You have two possible ways of participating in this year's program. If you are a nonprofit with access to teachers, you can either:

  • Set up a fundraising campaign with a teacher from a public school or public charter school on DonorsChoose.org.
  • Or apply for funding from DICK'S Sporting Goods' Sponsorships & Donations

If you work with multiple schools and those schools need a certain amount of equipment, as long as there is one eligible teacher at one of those schools that is open to being the DonorsChoose.org project creator, that teacher could request all equipment and then distribute across the school network.
